Mass media is a term used to refer to a section of the media specifically designed to reach a very large audience such as the population of a nation.
It was a term that was coined in the 1920s with the birth of nationwide radio networks, mianstream newspapers and magazines. However, mass media was actually present centuries before the term became common.
The term public media has a very similar meaning. It is the sum of the public mass distributors of news and entertainment across mediums such as newspapers, television, radio, broadcasting, which require union membership. Some internet media now has a means of potential exposure on a scale comparable to what was previously restricted to only a select group of media producers. Forms of Internet media can include personal web pages, podcasts and blogs.
