Big Ben is one of the world's best known and loved clock towers and had been a resident of Westminster, London for hundreds of years. It has also been a fixture in British culture for many years.
The famous clock tower has become a focus of New Year celebrations in the UK, with radio and TV stations tuning to its chimes to welcome the start of the year. In the same way, on Remembrance Day, the chimes of Big Ben are broadcast to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and the start of two minutes' silence.
For many years ITN's 'News at Ten' has begun with an opening sequence which features the Clock Tower and Big Ben with the chimes punctuating the announcement of the news headlines. Big Ben is still used today during the headlines and all ITV News bulletins use a graphic based on the clock face. Big Ben can also be heard striking the hour before some news bulletins on other key programmes such as BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service. The chimes are transmitted live via a microphone installed in the tower and connected to Broadcasting House.
When we think of Media we nowadays probably think of 'new media', whereas we used to communicate a lot more via print media. A process for the production of book texts and images, typically using printing presses.
